An electrocardiogram, or ECG, records the electrical activity of your heart through small sticky electrodes placed on your chest, arms and legs. It is one of the quickest and most widely used heart tests: painless, non-invasive and finished within minutes, yet capable of revealing a great deal about your heart’s rhythm and electrical health.

What an ECG Can Show
What Happens During an ECG
- You lie on an examination bed and small sticky electrodes are placed on your chest, arms and legs. Chest hair may need a small shave for good contact.
- You lie still and relaxed for a short recording, usually less than a minute of actual capture.
- The electrodes are removed and you can carry on with your day immediately.
Allow around 10 to 15 minutes for the whole appointment. There are no needles, no radiation and nothing enters your body; the electrodes only listen to your heart’s own electrical signals.
ECG Reporting Service for General Practices
We provide a formal ECG reporting service for referring GPs. Practices can send ECG traces to our clinic for specialist cardiologist interpretation and a written report, giving your patients specialist-level review without a full cardiology referral where one is not yet needed.

No special preparation is needed. Avoid applying moisturiser or oils to your chest on the day, as they can stop the electrodes sticking properly.
Sometimes, but not reliably on its own. An ECG can show electrical signs of a previous heart attack or strain, but narrowed arteries often produce a normal resting ECG. If a blockage is suspected, your doctor may arrange a stress echocardiogram or a CT coronary angiogram.
A normal resting ECG does not rule out an intermittent rhythm problem. Longer monitoring with a Holter or HeartBug device records your heart over days or weeks and is often the next step.
