Preventive Cardiology in Yarrabilba

Most heart disease develops silently over years before the first symptom appears, and for some people the first symptom is a heart attack. Preventive cardiology works on the years before that point: identifying your personal risk factors early and managing them properly, so problems are found and addressed while there is the most room to act.

At Yarrabilba Cardiology & Specialist Centre, our preventive cardiology service provides structured cardiac risk assessment and ongoing risk management, in partnership with your GP. All GP referrals are accepted, and bulk billing is available for eligible patients with a valid Medicare referral.

Who Should Consider a Cardiac Risk Assessment?

You do not need symptoms to benefit from a preventive review. It is worth discussing a referral with your GP if you have:

  • A family history of heart disease, heart attack, cardiomyopathy or sudden cardiac death, especially in relatives under 60
  • High cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes
  • A history of smoking
  • Being overweight, or carrying weight around the middle
  • A history of pregnancy complications linked to later heart risk, such as pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes
  • Chronic kidney disease or inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Reached middle age and simply never had your heart risk properly assessed

What a Cardiac Risk Assessment Involves

Your assessment is tailored to you, and may include:

Your Personalised Risk Management Plan

Assessment is only useful if it changes something. Based on your results, your cardiologist will work with you and your GP on a plan that may cover:

  • Cholesterol management. Dietary guidance and, where appropriate, medication.
  • Blood pressure control. Through our hypertension clinic where needed.
  • Lifestyle changes that actually stick. Practical guidance on physical activity, diet, alcohol, sleep and smoking cessation, built around your life rather than an idealised one.
  • Ongoing monitoring. Scheduled reviews and repeat testing at sensible intervals, so your plan adapts as your risk profile changes.

The goal is straightforward: reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke as far as your circumstances allow, and catch any developing problem early.

Preventive Cardiology FAQs

Yes, a GP referral is required to claim a Medicare rebate for a specialist consultation. Talk to your GP about whether a preventive cardiology review suits your situation.

Bulk billing is available for eligible patients with a valid Medicare referral. Some tests that may form part of your assessment, such as a coronary calcium score, are generally not rebated by Medicare, and our team will explain any costs before you proceed.

Australian guidance generally recommends regular cardiovascular risk assessment from age 45, or earlier for people with a family history, diabetes or other significant risk factors, and from a younger age for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Your GP can advise when to start.

Feeling well is not the same as being low risk, because high blood pressure, high cholesterol and early artery plaque cause no symptoms. That is precisely the group preventive cardiology exists for.

It depends on your results. Low-risk findings may need only infrequent review through your GP, while higher-risk profiles are reviewed more regularly. Your cardiologist will recommend an interval as part of your plan.

Take Your Heart Risk Seriously Before It Becomes a Problem

If heart disease runs in your family, or you have risk factors that have never been properly assessed, talk to your GP about a referral to our preventive cardiology service at Yarrabilba or Springwood.
